How to Choose a Domain Name: 9 Rules That Save You Regret Later

By Outsource Designs·7 min read

Your domain is one of the few decisions on this list you cannot easily undo. Changing it later means losing search rankings, reprinting everything, and confusing customers. So it is worth getting right the first time. These nine rules will get you there.

Start with your business name

In almost every case, your domain should be your business name. It is what customers search for, what they expect, and what builds recognition over time. Only reach for alternatives if the exact name is unavailable.

Keep it short and speakable

The best domains can be said over the phone without spelling them out. Aim for something a person can hear once and type correctly. Long domains get truncated, mistyped, and forgotten.

Skip hyphens, numbers and clever spellings

"Kwik" instead of "quick" feels clever until a customer types the normal spelling and lands on a competitor. Hyphens and numbers create the same ambiguity when spoken aloud. Plain and obvious beats clever every time.

Choose the right extension

For a South African business, .co.za is the natural choice and signals local credibility. Add .com if you operate internationally or want to protect the brand. Avoid obscure extensions that customers will not remember or trust.

Think about keywords, but do not force them

A relevant word in your domain (like "plumbing" or "bakery") can give a small search hint, but a strong brand name matters far more. Never sacrifice a clean, memorable name just to cram in a keyword.

Check it is genuinely available — everywhere

Before you commit, confirm the domain is free, and check that the matching handle is available on the social platforms you will use. A consistent name across your website and social media looks professional and is easier to market.

Protect your brand

If budget allows, register the obvious variations — the .com alongside your .co.za, or a common misspelling — and point them all to your main site. It is cheap insurance against someone else trading on your name.

Avoid trademark trouble

Do not register a domain that includes another company's brand name. It invites legal disputes and you can lose the domain entirely. Keep it original to you.

Decide, then move quickly

Good domains get taken daily. Once you have a name that passes these rules, register it promptly — deliberating for weeks is how businesses lose the perfect name to someone faster.
