Do I Really Need a Website in 2026? (An Honest Answer)

By Outsource Designs·8 min read

"I already have a Facebook page — do I really need a website?" It is one of the most common questions we hear. The honest answer is yes, and the reason is simpler than you might expect: you do not own your social media, but you do own your website.

The land you rent versus the land you own

Your social media presence sits on land you rent. The platform decides who sees your posts, changes the rules whenever it likes, and can suspend or delete your account with no warning and no appeal. Businesses lose years of followers overnight this way.

A website is land you own. Your domain, your content, your customer relationships — all under your control. Social media is excellent for reach and conversation, but it should point people back to something you actually own.

What a website does that a social page cannot

The real cost of not having one

The cost is invisible, which is what makes it dangerous. It is the customer who searched for you, found nothing, and called a competitor. The enquiry that never came because there was nowhere to send it. You never see these losses on a statement, but they add up every single month.

"But websites are expensive and complicated"

They used to be. Today a professional small-business website is affordable, quick to launch, and — when someone handles the hosting, domain and upkeep for you — genuinely low-maintenance. The barrier that existed five years ago is largely gone.

A website is not a cost so much as a salesperson who works every hour of every day and never asks for a raise.

When you might genuinely not need one (yet)

To be fair: if you are testing a tiny side project, are fully booked by word of mouth, and have no intention of growing, you can wait. But the moment you want to be found by new customers, look established, and stop depending on a platform you do not control — that is when a website stops being optional.
